Peterson Elementary is a pre-kindergarten through 5th grade school in Kodiak, Alaska, serving 206 students in the Kodiak Island Borough School District. Historically one of the district's strongest elementary schools, recent state data shows it has stepped back from its previous "elite" status. Economically, Peterson serves a distinctly more advantaged population than its immediate neighbors, with only about 27% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to over 54% at nearby East Elementary and Main Elementary.

Academically, even in a down year, Peterson remains comfortably above district and state averages. In 2025-2026, 46.3% of students were proficient in English language arts, compared to 39.6% districtwide and 32.9% statewide. Math proficiency was 44.2% versus 32.5% districtwide, and science proficiency was an impressive 64% compared to just 35.8% across the district. As the only one of the three local elementary schools serving the full PK-5 span, Peterson outperforms both same-district peers—East Elementary and Main Elementary—in nearly every subject and grade level. The gap is especially wide in 5th grade, where Peterson's ELA and math scores are roughly 20 and 13 percentage points higher than Main Elementary's.

It's worth noting Peterson achieves these results with larger class sizes (a 14.7 student-teacher ratio) than its neighbors. The school has also historically served its military-connected students very well—a visible subgroup given Kodiak's Coast Guard presence—though that subgroup's ranking has slipped in the most recent data. Looking at the big picture, Peterson's statewide ranking has fallen from the 92nd percentile in 2023-2024 to the 67th percentile in 2025-2026, driven by broad declines in math, science, and across multiple student subgroups. While the school has shown volatility before and bounced back, this drop is the lowest in its available history; however, its absolute scores make clear that Peterson remains a genuinely high-performing school and the strongest elementary option in its immediate area.
