Summary

Main Elementary is a small upper-elementary school in Kodiak, Alaska, serving 177 students in only grades 4 and 5 as part of the Kodiak Island Borough School District, a district ranked 12th out of 23 in Alaska. The school serves a largely low-income population, with about 62% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and it operates with a 12.2:1 student-teacher ratio. Because Main contains only two grade levels, its test scores are especially sensitive to the particular group of students in the building each year.

Academically, Main Elementary has improved from the 20th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 28th percentile in 2025-2026, but it still ranks in Alaska’s bottom quarter, at 119th of 166 elementary schools. Science is a genuine bright spot: 40.43% of students scored proficient, beating both the district’s 35.75% and the state’s 37.81%. Math essentially matches district and state averages at about 33%, while English language arts, at 34.07%, tops the state average of 32.89% but trails the district’s 39.55% by more than five points. Fifth graders outperform fourth graders by roughly nine percentage points in ELA and math, though this may reflect different cohorts rather than a full year of growth at Main.

The sharpest local comparison is with Peterson Elementary, located about five miles away. That school ranks in the 67th percentile, has a far lower poverty rate (27.67% free/reduced lunch), and outperforms Main Elementary in every tested subject — 5th-grade ELA proficiency is 61.54% there versus 38.71% at Main. Because East Elementary feeds students into Main after third grade, the drop between East Elementary’s 3rd-grade results and Main’s 4th-grade results raises a question about how well the transition between campuses supports learning. The most urgent concern, however, is special education: Main Elementary ranked last among 30 comparable Alaska schools in serving special education students in the latest year. The school is moving in the right direction, but these equity gaps deserve close attention.
