Winterberry School is a K–8 campus in the Anchorage School District serving 264 students in kindergarten through eighth grade in the Bryn Mawr Court area of Anchorage, Alaska — one of the few K–8 schools in a neighborhood where most nearby campuses stop after 6th grade. The school has fallen sharply in statewide rankings over the past four years. After ranking near the middle of Alaska schools in 2021–2022, it has spent four straight years in the bottom quarter of the state, landing 128th of 166 in 2025–2026 with a one-star rating.

The most serious academic concern is math. Only 17.61% of the school's students scored proficient in math in 2025–2026 — roughly half the district average and well below the state average of 32.20%. The gap has persisted for years and shows up at every grade level. Reading and science are much brighter: ELA proficiency of 32.86% and science proficiency of 37.21% both sit essentially at state averages, and 5th and 7th grade reading actually exceed district and state levels. This subject-specific pattern points to a need for targeted math intervention rather than a broad schoolwide overhaul. The school outranks every campus in its immediate cluster except nearby Scenic Park Elementary, which posts dramatically stronger results in every subject — 48.19% math proficiency versus 17.61%.
