Summary

Tongass School of Arts and Sciences Charter School is a small public charter elementary school in Ketchikan, Alaska, serving about 140 students in grades PK through 6 as part of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District. The school once stood out academically — ranking in the 72nd percentile with a 4-star rating in 2017-18 — but its statewide standing has declined steadily over the past decade, dropping to a 1-star rating in the 25th percentile in the most recent year. Since the school is so small, year-to-year results can shift considerably based on which classes are moving through each grade level.

Science is clearly Tongass's strongest subject. For a family weighing school choices, Tongass is a small, close-knit charter with a clear identity in arts and sciences, but it is worth asking how the school plans to strengthen literacy across all grade levels.
