Summary

Sacajawea Elementary School is a public elementary school (PK-5) serving about 220 students in Seattle's Wedgwood/View Ridge neighborhood, operating within the Seattle School District No. 1.

Sacajawea is a school on the rise, having significantly improved its statewide ranking to the 77th percentile, with students outperforming state averages in English, math, and science. What makes the school stand out is its effective use of resources—it achieves strong results with a moderate per-student budget and a favorable student-teacher ratio—and its commitment to serving all students well, including notable historical success with special education students. The school serves a more economically diverse population than some of its higher-performing neighbors, making its upward trajectory particularly impressive.

The school's story is especially interesting when compared to nearby schools. The immediate area is an "excellence island" with extreme performance variations; within a short distance, you find top performers like Wedgwood Elementary and Thornton Creek Elementary, mid-range schools like Green Lake Elementary, and lower-performing schools like James Baldwin Elementary. Interestingly, there's no clear link between spending and performance here; some of the highest-performing schools spend less per student. Sacajawea's path of steady improvement sets it apart in this competitive and uneven landscape.

Open Quote Our children have been students at Sacajawea Elementary for 4 years now, and we LOVE the school. My children are considered Advanced Learners and they are receiving the support that they need academically and are thriving. The school provides so much support for students of all academic and developmental levels, is doing so much equity work, and the school culture and community is very positive and close. As a small school, teachers are able to support all of their students. We are very happy here! Close Quote

Open Quote Our son had a fabulous Kindergarten year here. Staff in his classroom and in the whole school really work to create an expectation of kindness and community among the students. Close Quote

Open Quote Test scores reflect the average of all scores not the work of individual students. Sacajawea is committed to helping every student thrive and creates support for each individual learner. This kind of dedication and success rarely demonstrates itself in standardized testing which is often flawed or needlessly wordy to impress school boards. However, these tests only confuse students who actually do know the skill being tested. Sacajawea students routinely demonstrate improvement through the school year and move forward at or above grade level learning. Students enjoy school and most look forward to their time at school.
