Summary

Green Lake Elementary School is a public elementary school (PK-5) serving 367 students in Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood, operating within the Seattle School District No. 1 and earning a solid 4-star rating.

Academically, the school performs at or slightly above state averages, but its proficiency rates in English and math are notably lower than many nearby schools, such as West Woodland Elementary School, Bryant Elementary School, and Cascadia Elementary. This performance gap exists despite Green Lake having a lower student-teacher ratio of 14.2 and the highest per-student spending ($26,270) among these neighboring schools. The school's population includes a higher percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds (36.24% eligible for free/reduced lunch) compared to most of its top-performing peers, which have rates typically below 10%.

Key takeaways include the school's significant strength in supporting special education students and its stable performance over time. However, it faces a clear challenge in effectively serving its economically disadvantaged students, whose academic performance lags. The most similar nearby school is Olympic View Elementary School, which has a comparable demographic profile and performance level, offering a potential benchmark. For families, Green Lake offers smaller class sizes and significant resources, which may benefit students needing individual attention, though those prioritizing top-tier test scores may look to other area schools.

Open Quote Love the inclusiveness here. It's great to see kids working side-by-side with children with disabilities. The school is small and has an active PTA, with lots of opportunities to get involved (even if you're a working parent, like many of us). Reading levels divide up to ensure kids are working at their own level, and math is also leveled. I appreciate that my child isn't forced into classes that will bore her, because she's already mastered concepts. Love that it's a neighborhood school and that we often see our friends in the wild (or at Green Lake). While there's not a language component, we are seeing our children receive social lessons that will shape them for life, lessons we couldn't teach them on our own. Close Quote
