Summary

Johnson Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlottesville, Virginia, serving 329 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the Charlottesville City Public Schools district, which is ranked 94 out of 129 districts in the state.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student funding, Johnson Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools over the past several years, with a 1- or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's student performance on state assessments in Mathematics and English Reading is significantly lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 55.36% of 3rd-grade students and 45.76% of 4th-grade students at Johnson Elementary were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 67.16% and 62.88% for the district, and 72.89% and 72.98% for the state. Johnson Elementary also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 19.3% to 26.1% in recent years, much higher than the typical 15.7% rate for nearby schools.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Burnley-Moran Elementary, Greenbrier Elementary, and Jackson-Via Elementary, generally perform better than Johnson Elementary on key metrics like student achievement and chronic absenteeism. For example, Burnley-Moran Elementary has significantly higher proficiency rates in Mathematics and English Reading. While Johnson Elementary's funding levels are relatively high, the resources do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Addressing the school's challenges through targeted interventions and support programs could be crucial in helping Johnson Elementary improve its performance.

Open Quote Johnson Elementary offers an excellent education. The quality of teachers is top-notch and the class sizes are small. The after school programs are plentiful and the community of parents (including many UVA professionals, doctors and post-graduate students) is active. Close Quote

Open Quote Johnson Elementary is a wonderful school. The class sizes are small, allowing the students to be taught on an individual basis. The community is wonderful, with many of the students living in the surrounding neighborhoods. There are numerous after-school programs and many fundraisers, PTO meetings, school festivals, etc to get involved with. Our son has truly excelled at Johnson and we are so grateful to the wonderful teachers and staff. Close Quote

Open Quote We waste money in my school every day. We have about an 11 to 1 student teacher ratio and the children still do not learn. Why? Because the school district keeps throwing money at us, so the 15% of staff that care AND are hard-working don't just have to make up for regular slackers, we attract the worst slackers because they pay and cronyism are rampent. We even have one "teacher" that didn't have a license for years but keep getting extensions because of her 'frends'. I wish I could leave but I look at the students in my class and I know they only get a few chances and I have to be one of those shots to knowledge if at all possible. Close Quote
