Summary

Mary Carr Greer Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlottesville, Virginia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 496 students. The school is part of the Albemarle County Public Schools district, which is ranked 47 out of 129 school districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio, Mary Carr Greer Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Virginia elementary schools over the past several years, with significantly lower academic performance compared to the district and state averages. The school's proficiency rates in mathematics and reading range from 39.51% to 55.13%, compared to 66.93% to 75.86% for Albemarle County and 66.93% to 73.09% for the state. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 12.6% to 19.3%, which is significantly higher than the state average.

The performance and demographic data of Mary Carr Greer Elementary stand in stark contrast to the nearby Ivy Elementary and Hollymead Elementary schools, which are also part of the Albemarle County district. Ivy and Hollymead consistently rank in the top 20-25% of Virginia elementary schools, with much higher academic proficiency rates, lower chronic absenteeism, and lower percentages of students from low-income backgrounds. These findings suggest the need for a closer examination of the school's resource allocation, instructional practices, and targeted interventions to address the underlying challenges and support student learning.

Open Quote Greer Elementary is a very special school in the Albemarle County school district. As one of the most diverse elementary schools in the Charlottesville area, Greer serves a wide range of students who not only speak many different languages but also come from many different socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a true microcosm of our world today - right here in Charlottesville! I am constantly amazed at how the administrators, staff and teachers are able to effectively lead and teach such a unique population of students. But they do it - and they do it with excitement, energy and a lot of love. They truly look at each child as an individual - both their strengths and their weaknesses - and they help build each student up. They meet them where they are and help them grow both as students and as human beings. I am proud that my children go to Greer Elementary, because I know that my children are learning much more than just how to read or write. They are learning how to cooperate and communicate with people - ALL people. The world would be a better place if every child could go to Greer Elementary. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has been in school since he was 3 years old, and I just switched him from Greenbrier Elementary to Greer Elementary last year and it was the worst decision ever! My son is now 7 and his teacher is very rude and is very unprofessional. It has been nothing but problems since my son has been at Greer Elementary. He's always unhappy when he comes home from school, and he doesn't like his 2nd grade teacher. He's a very good kid, and has always done such a good job in school, and it really hurts me to see him unhappy. When school is out, he will be going back to Greenbrier Elementary (the best school in Charlottesville, VA). Close Quote
