Summary

John Winship Elementary in Spring, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 524 students in grades PK-5 within the Spring Independent School District (Isd), a district that faces systemic challenges but where Winship is emerging as a relative bright spot. The school has historically been a 2-star institution, but recent data shows a significant upward trend, climbing from the 29th percentile statewide in 2022-2023 to its highest rank in years at the 48th percentile in 2025-2026. This positive momentum sets it apart from many nearby Spring ISD schools like Salyers Elementary and Gloria Marshall Elementary, which are either declining or stuck in the bottom 20% of the state.

One of Winship's standout strengths is its upper elementary performance, particularly in 5th grade. In the 2025-2026 school year, 5th graders achieved a 59.49% proficiency rate in Reading and 56.96% in Math, significantly outpacing the district average (43.06% Reading, 39.18% Math) and even surpassing the state average in Math (47.38%). This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Salyers (25.81% Reading, 23.44% Math) and Gloria Marshall (36.3% Reading, 28.15% Math). The school also excels in Science, nearly doubling the district average with 25% proficiency in 5th-grade Science compared to the district's 13.39%. However, a persistent weakness is 3rd-grade Math, which has been below the district and state averages for three consecutive years, suggesting a need for early intervention.

Winship has shown exceptional progress in supporting students from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking in the 70th percentile statewide for effectiveness with this group in 2025-2026—a dramatic turnaround from the 18th percentile the previous year. This is the highest ranking among all nearby Spring ISD schools for this subgroup. While nearby charter and Conroe ISD schools like Sst Spring and Broadway Elementary consistently rank in the 80th-90th percentiles, they serve a very different demographic profile. Winship's recent gains prove that progress is possible within a challenging context, making it a school to watch for continued improvement.
