Summary

Sam Houston State University Charter School in Spring, TX, is a K-6 elementary school serving 437 students as a single-school charter district, standing out in an area where most nearby schools are part of larger districts like Spring Independent School District (Isd) or Aldine Independent School District (Isd).

This school consistently delivers top-tier academic results, earning a 4-star rating for four consecutive years and ranking in the 83rd percentile statewide. Its test scores in reading and math are often 20 to 40 percentage points higher than neighboring schools. For example, 6th-grade reading proficiency reached 81.25%, while nearby schools like Pearl M Hirsch Elementary and John Winship Elementary scored in the 36-44% range for 5th grade. The school also operates efficiently, spending about $8,060 per student compared to $10,166 to $12,670 at nearby district schools. Its K-6 structure offers a unique advantage, keeping students in a high-performing environment for an extra year and avoiding the typical 6th-grade slump seen in other districts.

Notably, the school excels with specific student groups, including special education students who jumped to the 95th percentile in 2025-2026. However, there is room for growth in supporting Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, who scored in the 60th and 63rd percentiles, respectively. While the school’s overall rank has slightly dipped from a peak of 86th percentile, it remains a standout choice in a region where many public schools rank in the bottom 25%.

Open Quote TERRIBLE experience. So bad that I pulled my child half-way through the year. As an educator(13 years classroom, 6 administration) I firmly believe in routine and consistency for young kids. But SHSU Charter was so bad that I was left with no choice. My efforts to work with the teacher were met with rolled eyes and blatant ignoring of requests. So much to my dismay, I was forced to go over her head to the administration. They were no better. Most likely didn't want to admit their error in hiring such a poor teacher. Tons of homework and testing were given, which is contrary to their advertisement. No additional special services such as speech or gifted were presented, though they can easily be obtained at a public school. The Humble campus is closing due to all of this, but the teacher will move to the Woodlands. Woodlands private and public schools are highly rated. There is no reason to send your child here.
