Summary

Memorial Middle in Houston, TX, is a large, high-performing public middle school serving 1,236 students in grades 6-8 within the Spring Branch Independent School District (Isd), consistently ranking in the top 2% of Texas middle schools for nearly a decade. This school stands out dramatically from its neighbors: while nearby schools like Northbrook Middle and Spring Woods Middle serve student populations that are almost entirely economically disadvantaged, Memorial Middle has an exceptionally low rate of students eligible for free or reduced lunch (just 10%). This socioeconomic advantage correlates with academic outcomes that are roughly double or triple those of its closest geographic neighbors, such as Spring Forest Middle and West Briar Middle, with proficiency rates in Reading (84-90%) and Mathematics (81-91%) far exceeding state averages.

Despite its stellar performance, Memorial Middle spends significantly less per student ($8,971) than lower-performing district peers like Spring Oaks Middle ($13,413), suggesting highly efficient resource use. The school demonstrates remarkable equity, earning 5-star ratings for its Hispanic, White, Multi-racial, and Special Education students, with Hispanic students ranking in the 98th percentile statewide. However, even this top-tier school faces a universal challenge: a notable "7th Grade Math Dip" where proficiency drops to 48.39%, though this still far exceeds the district average of 19.26% and state average of 29.41%.

Families in the area have access to two exceptionally high-performing public options: Memorial Middle as a large, comprehensive neighborhood school, and Cornerstone Academy, a smaller, highly selective magnet school just 2.71 miles away that ranks 6th in the state. This creates an interesting dynamic within Spring Branch Independent School District (Isd), which houses both the highest-performing schools (Memorial, Cornerstone) and the lowest-performing schools (Northbrook, Spring Woods, Spring Oaks), while nearby Houston Independent School District (Isd) schools like Revere Middle cluster in the middle-to-low range.

Open Quote I am a student a Memorial Middle School, 7th year. My parents have lately been saying how smart I have become of this school. Sure, I seen a difference in my academic performance, and I'm not unhappy. The thing is, the teachers here REALLY put pressure on you. I'm not saying we have bad teachers, what I am saying is that they REALLY want us to succeed. My Language Arts teacher even told me that once. I rate this school five stars because of the nice community, teachers, fellow students, and much more. Basically, this school is home to me. Close Quote
