Summary

Pflugerville High School is a large, traditional public high school in Pflugerville, TX, serving 1,794 students in grades 9-12 within the Pflugerville Independent School District (Isd), where over half of the student body comes from low socio-economic backgrounds. While the school has seen a steady decline in its state academic ranking over the past decade—dropping from the 72nd percentile to the 38th percentile—it still boasts a strong graduation rate of around 95%, significantly higher than the district average, and a very low dropout rate of just 1.2%. This creates a notable paradox: the school is highly effective at keeping students on track to graduate, even as its overall test scores have slipped.

One of the most striking comparisons is with Hendrickson High School, located just 2.95 miles away in the same district. While Pflugerville High has declined, Hendrickson has risen to the 85th percentile, with vastly superior test scores in subjects like Biology (86.6% vs. 64.6% proficient) and English I (75.2% vs. 48.9%). Pflugerville High sits in the middle of the district's three traditional high schools, performing better than John B Connally High School (17th percentile) but trailing far behind Hendrickson. A critical weakness is Algebra I, where proficiency rates have hovered around 19-25% over the last four years—roughly half the district average and less than half the state average—suggesting a systemic issue with math foundations entering high school.

Interestingly, the school's academic challenges are not due to a lack of funding, as it spends $10,177 per student, more than the higher-performing Hendrickson High ($9,641) and nearby Cedar Ridge High School ($8,790). Nearby charter schools like Harmony Science Academy-Pflugerville (62nd percentile) and Nyos Lamar Secondary (ranked higher) serve diverse student bodies and achieve stronger academic results, offering potential models for improvement. For parents, Pflugerville High offers a supportive environment that keeps students in school and on track to graduate, but families should be aware of the school's declining academic performance, particularly in math, and consider how it compares to other options in the area.

Open Quote Admin is a mixed bag. Some are awful and some are excellent, but the teachers are fantastic. The kids don't interact much with admin, so it isn't that big of a deal to us, just something to be aware of. It's the teachers that really matter most and this is where Pf High shines. Loads of passionate and experienced teachers, great communication and excellent student support. Most will go out of their way to help the kids. As a school with students at a variety of performance levels, our kids stand out here. They will both graduate in the top 10. This will grant them automatic admission into UT or any other state funded TX university. This is a benefit that not everyone considers when choosing to move to top rated school districts. Top rated high schools have more competition. This equates to a lower individual class ranking for most kids. Close Quote
