Summary

Jim Plain Elementary in Leander, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 704 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the Leander Independent School District (Isd), a highly-rated district. However, the school has experienced a notable decline in recent years, dropping from the 71st percentile in the 2022-2023 school year to the 45th percentile for 2025-2026. This downward trend is a key concern, especially when compared to nearby schools like Tarvin Elementary (2.7 miles away), which consistently ranks in the 87th-90th percentile, and William J Winkley Elementary (3.4 miles away), which remains stable in the 77th-80th percentile. Even Whitestone Elementary (2.7 miles away) maintains a higher ranking in the 68th-75th percentile range.

The most critical academic weakness at Jim Plain is in Mathematics, where proficiency rates across all tested grades (3rd, 4th, and 5th) are significantly below both district and state averages. For example, math proficiency rates range from 31.3% to 39.8%, while high-performing neighbors like Bar W Elementary in Liberty Hill Independent School District (Isd) achieve rates 20-30 percentage points higher. Reading performance is closer to state averages, suggesting a specific issue with math instruction or curriculum rather than a school-wide failure. Additionally, 5th Grade Science scores are a major concern, with only 13% of students proficient in the 2024-2025 school year, compared to 30.7% for the district.

Jim Plain also struggles to serve key student subgroups effectively, ranking in the bottom 30th percentile for Hispanic students, low socio-economic status students, and English Language Learners. This is a contrast to nearby schools like Donald Lewis Hisle (1.5 miles away), which ranks in the 84th percentile. Interestingly, the school showed strong past performance for At-Risk students (81st percentile in 2021-2022), indicating it has the capacity to improve. The geographic proximity of high and low performers within the same district suggests that school leadership and instructional programs are key drivers of outcomes, making Jim Plain a school at a crossroads that needs targeted interventions to reverse its current trend.

Open Quote This school is definitely unorganized, PTA is a joke and their events have zero volunteers. My son's teacher didn't even send an introductory phone call or email when he started school. Knew nothing about water bottle, snack schedule, work loads or about the teacher in general until we attended open house (2 weeks after school started). Teachers will take days to email parents back, students never do projects or fun activities, its all copied worksheets. When teachers are out instead of getting sub's the school splits the class up and gives them to other teachers. Yes, they go into another classroom and sit in the back. Horrible horrible school. My son is "excelling" when he was struggling at his last school. He is now one of the top ones in his class, his teacher gives no homework or communicates on nothing he can work on. School is just a joke Close Quote
