Summary

Poe Elementary is a mid-sized elementary school (PK-5) in the Houston Independent School District (Isd), serving 748 students in a diverse area of Houston, TX. Historically a strong performer ranking in the top 20-30% of Texas elementary schools, Poe has recently experienced a significant decline, dropping to the 65th percentile (3 stars) in the 2025-2026 school year—its lowest performance in available data. This decline is most pronounced among its most vulnerable students: performance for low socio-economic status students plummeted to the 11th percentile, and Hispanic students fell to the 25th percentile, while White students continue to be served well at the 76th percentile. This widening equity gap is the school's most critical challenge.

Poe occupies a unique "middle ground" in a neighborhood of extremes. With a 35% free/reduced lunch rate, it sits between very low-poverty schools like River Oaks Elementary (9.5%) and West University Elementary (6%) and high-poverty schools like Lockhart Elementary (94%). This economic diversity is a key differentiator, but it also highlights a stark contrast with nearby Roberts Elementary (1.1 miles away), which has a similar enrollment and spending per student but a 99th percentile ranking and only 17.6% free/reduced lunch rate. The 17-point difference in economic disadvantage appears to be a powerful predictor of the 34-point gap in their state rankings.

Interestingly, demographically similar magnet schools in the area are outperforming Poe. Wharton K-8 Dual Language Academy (39% free/reduced lunch) and Arabic Immersion Magnet School (52% free/reduced lunch) both achieve significantly higher overall rankings (83rd and 85th percentiles), suggesting Poe's struggles are not inevitable. Academically, 5th-grade math is a recurring weakness, with only 45.16% proficient in 2025-2026, below both district and state averages. Meanwhile, Poe's Spanish-language STAAR exam performance is highly inconsistent—3rd graders scored an impressive 64.29% proficient in math, while 5th graders scored 0%. These patterns indicate that while Poe has a history of strength, its leadership must urgently address the root causes of its equity gap to reverse the downward trend.
