Summary

Houston Elementary in Denton, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 537 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade, part of the Denton Independent School District (Isd). This school stands out for its exceptional support of English Language Learners, ranking in the 96th percentile statewide in 2025-2026, a dramatic improvement that far surpasses nearby schools. Additionally, Houston Elementary has shown a remarkable turnaround for Special Education students, jumping from the 17th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 71st percentile just two years later, indicating targeted and effective interventions.

Reading is a clear strength at Houston Elementary, with students consistently outperforming both district and state averages across all tested grades. Notably, 5th-grade Reading proficiency reached 69.32% in 2025-2026, compared to the district's 59.77% and the state's 58.47%. This "5th grade bump" suggests a particularly effective upper-grade reading curriculum that helps students accelerate their literacy skills. In contrast, 5th-grade Math remains a volatile area, with scores dipping below the state average in 2024-2025 before rebounding, unlike the consistent math performance at nearby McNair Elementary.

When compared to its closest rival, Nelson Elementary, which has similar enrollment and economic demographics, Houston Elementary holds a clear advantage in upper-grade Reading. However, a widening performance gap between male and female students—with males ranking in the 77th percentile and females in the 60th percentile in 2025-2026—is a trend worth monitoring. Overall, Houston Elementary is a solid middle-tier school within the district, outperforming lower-ranked schools like Borman Elementary and Rivera Elementary, while facing different challenges than higher-performing, more affluent schools like Hawk Elementary.

Open Quote Didnt put our son on a 504 plan because he has adhd, and is a transfer student. Failed to put him on the plan so they could kick him out due to him being a transfer student. His academic scores are excellent, 1st grade reading at 3rd grade level, already knows multiplication, division, and fractions. Just getting bored, finishing before the other students, and being disruptive. This tells me that they would prefer to kick out any mildly disruptive students if given a choice, but cannot because they aren’t transfers. We told them we were withdrawing him and they had the 504 paperwork the very same day. They should be ashamed of themselvesyou know who you are, and who we are. Close Quote
