Summary

Metcalf Elementary is a PK-5 campus in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Isd) serving 855 students in a densely populated area of Houston, where over 83% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school’s state ranking has been volatile, peaking at the 73rd percentile in 2021-2022 but dropping to the 44th percentile in the most recent data, placing it below the district average and in the lower half of Texas elementary schools.

Academically, Metcalf shows a mixed picture. Reading scores have improved steadily across all grade levels, but math remains a critical weakness, with proficiency rates around 35-41%—8 to 20 points below the district average and far behind high-performing nearby schools like Copeland Elementary and Lowery Elementary, which serve populations with lower poverty rates and rank in the top 20% of the state. The school effectively supports its low-socioeconomic status students, ranking in the 67th percentile statewide for this group, but struggles with its gifted and talented students, who dropped from the 99th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 25th percentile recently.

Despite higher per-student spending ($11,087) than Copeland ($9,351) and Lowery ($9,534), outcomes remain low, suggesting funding effectiveness is an issue. The school’s volatile ranking history and inconsistent performance contrast with stable high-performers like Copeland and Lowery, as well as consistently low-performing peers like Tipps Elementary and Lieder Elementary. While reading improvements offer hope, the persistent math crisis is the most pressing area for the school to address.

Open Quote Do you want your children to be in an environment which provides NO consequences to them, caters to their every whine and whim, and enables them to become disrespectful members of society? If so, then THIS is the school for YOU!

Teachers are fantastic! Administration runs out great teachers with their micromanaging ways and NO SUPPORT to them.

There is NO Parent-Teacher Organization, as administration does not want any external players coming in and exposing their rotten ways. It's questionable exactly how this administration has flown under the radar for such a long time! Close Quote
