Summary

Travis Hts Elementary is a mid-sized PK-5 school in Austin, TX (78704), serving 469 students as part of the Austin Independent School District (Isd), and it has historically been a solid, middle-of-the-pack performer in a neighborhood with highly polarized school options.

This school occupies a unique "Goldilocks" position in its area. It is neither a high-flyer like Zilker Elementary or Becker Elementary (which consistently rank in the 83rd-94th percentile), nor a struggling school like Dawson Elementary or Linder Elementary (which rank in the 0th-4th percentile). With about 62% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Travis Hts has a moderate level of economic disadvantage—significantly more affluent than schools like Sanchez Elementary (90.2%) or Galindo Elementary (90.4%), but with a much higher poverty rate than its high-performing neighbors. The school also boasts a very favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.3:1, which is better than both Becker (16.1:1) and Zilker (13.2:1).

However, the most critical finding is a recent sharp decline. After consistently earning a 3-star rating from 2016-2017 through 2023-2024, the most recent data shows a drop to a 2-star rating and the 36th percentile statewide—its lowest point in nearly a decade. This decline is driven by a widening achievement gap: while White students rank in the 64th percentile, economically disadvantaged students rank in the 3rd percentile. Additionally, a historical strength in 5th-grade performance has evaporated, with recent scores falling below district averages. Spending is not the issue (at $10,999 per student, it is between the struggling and high-performing schools), suggesting the challenge lies in how resources are allocated, particularly for its most vulnerable students.

Open Quote This school is a nightmare.

We have been trying for three years to get some assistance for our son, who is quite bright but appears to have some attention deficit issues. Administration and teachers have been completely unresponsive. They keep telling us how great he is and that he's doing fine while his grades have gone from straight As to mostly Cs.

He is a delightful, well-behaved child, so no one cares that he's falling behind. As long as he's not a thorn in their side, he can just get lost. We have ended up going over the principal's head to district administration, but have yet to get any result there either.

Words cannot express how worried, angry and frustrated we are at this point. He's about to go to middle school and is sure to continue this down-hill slide without intervention. We can't afford private school so we are seriously considering taking him out of school altogether. Close Quote
