Summary

Slayter Creek Middle in Anna, TX, serves 682 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Anna Independent School District (Isd), a district ranked in the bottom 20% of Texas school districts. Over half of its students (55.13%) are eligible for free or reduced lunch, indicating a higher level of economic disadvantage compared to many nearby schools. The school has experienced a significant decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, dropping from the 59th percentile in 2019 to the 27th percentile for the 2025-2026 school year, a stark contrast to nearby high-performing schools like Van Alstyne J H (86th percentile) and Melissa Middle (92nd percentile).

A major driver of this decline is critically low math proficiency, with only 9.3% of 8th graders proficient in math compared to the state average of 47.24%—the lowest rate among all comparable schools. For context, Van Alstyne J H had 74.12% proficiency and Melissa Middle had 72.57% in the same subject. However, the school shows a notable strength in Algebra I, with 67.27% of students proficient on the End-of-Course exam, significantly outperforming both the district (44.3%) and state (54.03%). This creates a "two-tiered" math department where advanced students excel while the majority struggle. Additionally, Slayter Creek Middle is the lower-performing of the two middle schools in the Anna Independent School District (Isd), with Clemons Creek Middle consistently outperforming it in overall ranking and most subject areas.

Despite these academic challenges, the school maintains an exceptionally low dropout rate of 0.0%, indicating success in keeping students enrolled. The school also shows a relative strength with Gifted and Talented students, reaching the 77th percentile in 2022-2023, though this has declined to the 40th percentile. However, the school struggles significantly with specific student subgroups, including those from low socio-economic backgrounds and multi-racial students, who perform in the bottom 10-11% of the state. The gap in performance with nearby "neighborhood powerhouses" is immense—in 8th-grade Reading, Slayter Creek Middle (39.47%) trails Melissa Middle (79.27%) by nearly 40 percentage points, highlighting the competitive disadvantage the school faces in its immediate area.
