Summary

San Jacinto Elementary in Amarillo, TX, is a mid-sized PK-5 school in the Amarillo Independent School District (Isd) that serves 366 students in a community with a very high level of economic disadvantage, with over 94% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

While the school's overall academic performance has placed it in the bottom 25-30% of Texas elementary schools in recent years, it has a remarkable and standout strength: it is exceptionally effective with its English Language Learner (ELL) students. In the most recent year, San Jacinto ranked in the 79th percentile statewide for serving its ELL students, earning a 4-star rating—a dramatic improvement from just two years prior. This success is a clear outlier compared to the school's overall 1-star rating and suggests that specific programs or dedicated staff are working very well for this group. However, the school faces a persistent challenge in serving its African American students, who have ranked in the bottom 8% of the state for three consecutive years. Understanding and replicating the strategies used for ELL students could be key to improving outcomes for all students.

Compared to nearby schools, San Jacinto's situation is unique. It has the highest poverty rate among its peers, such as Wolflin Elementary (68.1% low-income) and Woodlands Elementary (31.11% low-income), which ranks in the 97th percentile statewide. Even when compared to high-poverty neighbors like Wills Elementary (92.58% low-income) and Park Hills Elementary (91.95% low-income), San Jacinto underperforms overall. The school also spends more per student ($12,212) than many nearby schools, including Woodlands ($8,963) and the district average, but these additional resources have not yet translated into broad academic gains. The most recent test scores show a mixed picture, with 4th-grade Reading and Math at their highest in three years, while 3rd-grade scores are near their lowest, suggesting a possible cohort effect or a recent dip in early-grade instruction.

Open Quote San Jacinto is the only No Excuses University in Texas. Making it possible for their students to actually achieve a secondary education after High School. Their Principal Mr. Curry really has a true love for his students and the energy to motivate San Jacinto Elementary in such a positive way. My daughters have attended several nice schools From Amarillo to Idaho Each with their own unique programs and they tell me often that this is their favorite of them all.
To be honest I was afraid to enroll them here because I feared a school in the poor neighborhood might not have the programs to inspire me children. I thank Mr. Curry and all the staff of San Jacinto Elementary not only does it inspire my children but goes beyond expectations to really care about my children's future. Close Quote
