Summary

New Foundations Charter School is a public charter school in Philadelphia, PA that serves 1,508 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The school is considered an alternative school and serves a predominantly low-income student population, with 64.84% to 99.8% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch over the past few years.

Despite the challenges of serving a high-need community, New Foundations Charter School has consistently strong academic performance. The school outperforms the state averages in math, ELA, and science proficiency, with 49% of students proficient or better in math and 56% proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state's 41.7% and 48.5% respectively. The school also maintains high 4-year graduation rates, ranging from 87.5% to 90.8%, and low dropout rates, ranging from 0.1% to 1.6%. In comparison, nearby charter schools like Philadelphia Academy Charter School and Tacony Academy Charter School have mixed results, performing better in certain subject areas but not others.

The significant increase in spending per student at New Foundations Charter School, from $706 in 2020-2021 to $20,107 in 2022-2023, may have contributed to the school's academic success. This suggests that adequate funding can be an important factor in supporting student achievement, even in high-need communities. Overall, New Foundations Charter School appears to be a model for successful charter school education in the Philadelphia area, effectively serving its students and achieving strong academic outcomes.

Open Quote I have been attending New Foundations Charter School for over 8 years now and can honestly say this is one of the best schools to be at. The teachers want to see you achieve and do their best to help you in any way. Is the school strict? Yes. If your child is getting detentions and such then that is on them for not behaving. It is far from the teacher's fault. The school has a friendly environment and many opportunities for the students, this including academics and extracurricular. Close Quote
