Summary

Tacony Academy Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that serves grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 1,074 students. The school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, with 100% of students qualifying in recent years.

While Tacony Academy Charter School has seen strong graduation rates, with a 4-year graduation rate of 87.9% in the 2023-2024 school year and a low dropout rate of 1.4%, its academic performance lags behind nearby charter schools. The school's test scores on the PSSA and Keystone Exams are below the state averages across most grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 26.3% of Tacony Academy students were proficient or better in PSSA Math, compared to the state average of 41.7%. Similarly, the school's Keystone Exam proficiency rates in Algebra I (25.8%), Biology (37.1%), and Literature (58%) were all below the state averages.

Interestingly, Tacony Academy Charter School has seen a significant increase in spending per student, rising from $14 in 2019-2020 to $21,685 in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the nearby Mathematics Science & Technology Community Charter School ($20,317) and New Foundations Charter School ($20,107). However, this increased investment does not appear to have translated into improved academic outcomes for the students, as the school's test scores remain below state averages.

Open Quote Deeply troubled school. There has been way too many fights and the staff had. no control over the school. In addition I was bullied and sexually harassed and the principle did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, and yet Tacony calls themselves a "carring school community" DO NOT send your child to this school, you will regret it. Open Quote This school has been a great Disappointment!! I have had more then my share of bad experiences with the teachers &Vice principal they are very unprofessional. My child has been in a reading program the last two years there to help him advance which has done anything but good at least in their eyes. My child has been there since day one and has never had to take a spelling test. They have never made AYP its no wonder why kids are struggling. They are sent home with new stuff and have no idea how to do it they either get it or they are left behind. My child's last teacher was by far the rudest and would make fun of him in the class room in front of other students . I can't tell you how many times he would come home in tears. My husband and I have met with the teacher Vice principal and Principal over these matters and got no where . The school was shut down for two days with no notice to parents if it wasn't for the news I would of had no idea what was going on. My child is terrified to return this year. I could go on and on about the problems with this school But I will just end by saying he won't be back. Close Quote
