Summary

Grant Middle School is a public middle school located in Syracuse, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 601 students. The school is part of the Syracuse City School District, which is ranked 849 out of 874 school districts in New York and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. Grant Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of New York middle schools over the past 10 years, with a ranking between 1228 and 1497 out of around 1500 middle schools.

Grant Middle School significantly underperforms compared to the state and district averages in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 15.34% of 6th graders, 17.65% of 7th graders, and 33.33% of 8th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 50.86%, 50.99%, and 52.38%, respectively. The math proficiency rates are even lower, with only 12.23% of 6th graders, 14.55% of 7th graders, and 9.68% of 8th graders meeting or exceeding proficiency standards, compared to the state averages of 51.2%, 56.47%, and 46.74%. The school's performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as Native American students, Special Education students, English Language Learners, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

While Grant Middle School is the lowest-performing school in the Syracuse City School District, the other nearby middle schools within the district, such as Expeditionary Learning Middle School, Brighton Academy, and Syracuse STEM at Blodgett, also perform poorly, with rankings in the bottom 20-30% of New York middle schools. This suggests a systemic issue within the district that extends beyond just Grant Middle School. Addressing the underlying factors, such as the high concentration of students from low-income families and the overall challenges facing the Syracuse City School District, will be crucial in improving the educational outcomes for the students at Grant Middle School.

Open Quote I have lived in the 900 block of Kirkpatrick St. for 24 years. I have had 3 children go through Grant Middle School and have gone on to graduate and college. My question is, Why are these children allowed to walk down the middle of the street? There are sidewalks on either side of The road. They start walking down the middle of the street right at the corner of Grant Blvd. and Kirkpatrick, right in front of the gentleman that stands at that corner, that obviously works for your school. Why is he there? Teach the kids that it is unexceptable to walk down the middle of the street and if they continue, there will be consequences. The problem with this area is, NO CONSEQUENCES FOR BAD BEHAVIOR. When I was a kid, we were taught not to walk in the street No the kids do it right in front of the "supposed" authority figures. If we continue to put up with behavior like this, their behavior will only get worse. It's sad to see how bad this area has gotten over the last 24 years. My home has been in the family since it was built in 1890. If things don't start changing soon, I will be the last family member that will ever live here. Close Quote
