Summary

New Hope Elementary is a public elementary school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, serving 538 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County Schools district, which is ranked 87 out of 242 districts in the state.

Academically, New Hope Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools over the past five years, with proficiency rates in Math and Reading that are 5-15 percentage points lower than the district averages. The school's performance is particularly weak for certain student subgroups, such as African American and Hispanic students. In comparison, nearby schools like Estes Hills Elementary and Seawell Elementary in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district have maintained higher rankings and smaller achievement gaps between student subgroups.

New Hope Elementary also faces challenges related to its socioeconomic status, with 67-76% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch over the past three years, significantly higher than the nearby Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school's academic performance does not seem to be commensurate with its level of funding, suggesting that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to the school's challenges.

Open Quote I am a parent of 3 children at New Hope. We have had wonderful teachers each year. There is a feeling of community and love at New Hope. I volunteer, like many parents, in the classroom of each of my children. Many of the teachers have been at New Hope for a long time, which is a great sign of a great school. My children love going to school and are thriving. Close Quote
