Summary

Riverside Elementary School is a PK-5 public school in Shreveport, LA, serving 404 students within the Caddo Parish school district, where it has consistently earned a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past six years. The school serves a predominantly low socio-economic status population, with 68% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and its student-teacher ratio has improved to a favorable 12.7, offering a more personalized learning environment than nearby magnet schools like South Highlands Elementary Magnet School and Fairfield Magnet School, which have ratios around 14-15.

Riverside sits in a unique middle ground, geographically surrounded by some of the highest-performing magnet schools in the state and some of the lowest-performing traditional schools. Its test scores are near or slightly below the state average but significantly above struggling neighbors like Creswell Elementary School and Broadmoor STEM Academy—for example, Riverside’s all-grades Math proficiency (56%) is nearly double that of Broadmoor (31%) and Creswell (29%). However, the most alarming differentiator is chronic absenteeism, which has skyrocketed to 31.2% in 2024-2025, nearly identical to the district average but far worse than the state average (22.5%) and dramatically higher than magnet schools (1-4%). This attendance crisis is a major red flag, even as the school’s academic performance remains stable.

An interesting bright spot is the "5th Grade Bounce," where Riverside’s 5th graders outperform the state average in both Math (62% vs. 61%) and English Language Arts (76% vs. 73%), suggesting effective instruction at that level. Social Studies is a consistent weakness across all grades, with only 44% proficient compared to 55% statewide. The school’s performance should be viewed in context: it serves a more economically diverse population than the elite magnets, and its middle-tier results reflect resilience despite significant challenges. For parents, Riverside offers a solid, stable academic foundation with smaller class sizes, but addressing the attendance crisis will be key to unlocking its full potential.

Open Quote I must say, Riverside Elementary has gone downhill. When my child was attending ECE there it was awesome, but something has definitely gone awry at the school because the teachers are leaving. There is talk of being bullied by teachers. Mistreating children in their formative years is inexcusable! I tried email for a conference...no answer. Need to address this issue IMMEDIATELY. Close Quote

Open Quote This is not a great school at all. Some the teachers are mean to the kids. My daughter comes home complaining all the time. My son has broken a bone while attending school. The principal never returns calls. It's horrible. Close Quote
