Summary

Lowe Elementary is a public elementary school in Louisville, Kentucky, serving 594 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Jefferson County school district, which is ranked 140 out of 157 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lowe Elementary has a strong performance history, ranking as high as 10th out of 700 Kentucky elementary schools in the 2018-2019 school year and consistently earning a 4 or 5-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past decade. However, its ranking has declined in more recent years, dropping to 202nd out of 685 schools in the 2024-2025 school year. The school consistently outperforms the Jefferson County and Kentucky state averages in test scores, particularly for certain student subgroups. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Lowe Elementary ranked 5th out of 25 Kentucky elementary schools for Asian students and 11th out of 140 for African American students in mathematics.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Cochrane Elementary, Lowe Elementary generally outperforms its peers in terms of test scores, chronic absenteeism, and spending per student. This may be due in part to Lowe Elementary's relatively low percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients (26.6% in 2023-2024), which is lower than the district average and may contribute to the school's strong academic performance.

Open Quote Both of my children have attended Lowe and I have been very active in the PTA.There is not a better, more encouraging, and diverse school in JCPS. The principal is wonderful, engaged, and focused on bettering the school in a myriad of ways, not just tests, but also student morale, teacher happiness, and new curriculum development to challenge all our students at whatever level they happen to be. I love this community and will be sad when my son completes 5th grade and Lowe is no longer part of our daily lives as a family. Close Quote

Open Quote Lowe is a great school! They have an active PTA that truly invests in the kids and the teachers. The school has lots of opportunities for family involvement. My son felt comfortable there very quickly after he started and the administration gets to know all of the kids. They knew my sons name, and who I was, within just a couple of weeks of kindergarten.

The school is also rich in diversity, which was important to us. Close Quote

Open Quote Very structured learning environment with services to meet all students' needs. Office staff is very friendly and accommodating. Class sizes in 4th and 5th grade are too large, and teachers get to select from having an instructional assistant or being paid more money to teach more students. I don't agree with teachers selecting pay over having another adult to meet students' individual needs. Quality of teaching staff is variable. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers, principal and counselor really care about the kids. Rated one of the best schools in the state. My child loves it - and when I see the other kids at school they look like they do too. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers are always understanding and helpful. The office staff could be a lot nicer, but I assume they just don't like working there. The teachers seem to love it and that is what counts to me. Close Quote
