Open Quote We moved from NJ to Brookhaven with a fifth grader and I was worried about how effective virtual learning would be. To my big relief, the school didn't cave in to demands for reopening - everyone in my family eventually ended up having covid, and had they reopened, it would only have been a matter of time before it spread to others in class/school.
Virtual learning has had it's own limitations, I wish they had better teachers for science. However, I am really happy with the manner in which they've taught other subjects (including math) and yet have given my kid enough leeway to not feel burdened by assignments.
I just wish this had been a regular school year, where my kid could go out and play or make friends. The silver lining is - i don't think this year was a washout. My kid did become a lot better at studies, and that's all that matters. Close Quote

Open Quote We transferred our first grader from Texas mid-year 2018 where he was in a top public school with excellent STEM. Ashford Park touted its math and science but like so many public schools they have become an "assessment" (standardized testing) mill where there is little or no actual instruction (just test after test) and it's only gotten worse as our child has progressed through 2nd grade and into 3rd grade which has been a joke due to COVID. Ashford Park Elementary is situated in a largely white and affluent area full of big city, limosine liberals who are now scared to death of in person learning because they are following the wrong science. The biggest problem is that Ashford Park is situtated in Dekalb County which unlike neighboring counties has made no effort to return to the classroom. In fact, 80 of teachers surveyed voted to keep A.P.E. an all virtual school, all the time against the wishes of the parents who overwhelmingly want to return to the classroom. The kids were set to return 2 days per week starting January 2021 but that "plan" has now been suspended indefinitely. Prediction: They will not return all year. Yet the lazy teachers are still taking three workdays this week and MLK day next week (having just returned from Christmas Break on January 4, 2020 to prepare for a reopening that is not going to happen. Things that make you go hmm. So the kids will only be doing online work 13 days in January and nothing in person. They will only be in school 13 days in January 2021 after a 2-week Christmas Break. More and more parents like ourselves are starting to enroll our kids in private schools at great expense, taking our kids high test scores with us. Good luck to A.P.E. which, again, is located in Dekalb County. Do your demographic research on Dekalb County and draw your own conclusions. Suffice it to say that at a recent school board meeting at least one board member accused another of being racist for wanting the kids to return to the classroom together, presumably because COVID is alleged to disproportionately affect A.A. kids. Do you follow that? Legally required and culturally desirable integration + COVID = Racism. That's Dekalb County for ya right there. Dumb and dumber. So enroll at this school only if you never want your kid to attend class (or learn). School has become a joke. The County is a national joke and a disgrace. On a positive note, we don't have to wait in the car pool line with all of the Ashford Park snobs who foolishly ride around in golf carts there is btw no beach or golf course within a safe driving distance of the school. I'm not sure who started the swag waggon trend in this upscale neighborhood but I suspect that many believe they are saving the environment by driving battery operated golf carts (charged at electrical charging stations powered by coal). Ashford Park: Where we follow the science. Close Quote

Open Quote We have attended Ashford Park Elementary for 6 years. Our oldest graduated this year and heads to middle school. Our youngest started PreK last year and Kindergarten this year. Our middle enters 5th grade this year. We love Ashford Park. The teachers are loving & firm but also patient & encouraging. Those character traits have made our children's elementary years wonderful beyond words. The parents are very involved and the PTA continues to grow and thrive. The foundation has enabled lots of extras for the children and teachers. If you want a little piece of paradise just walk into the doors of this precious school. Close Quote
