Summary

Bear Lake Elementary School in Apopka, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 849 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the highly-rated Seminole County School District, though its state ranking has declined from the 77th percentile a decade ago to the 50th percentile today.

While Bear Lake benefits from the overall strength of the Seminole County district—outperforming nearby Phillis Wheatley Elementary, Riverside Elementary, and Lockhart Elementary in Orange County—it lags significantly behind its Seminole County peers. For instance, Sabal Point Elementary School (95th percentile) and Wekiva Elementary School (83rd percentile) have maintained high rankings, while Bear Lake has dropped. The school also faces a higher chronic absenteeism rate (21.9%) compared to these top-performing neighbors (Sabal Point at 15.0%, Wekiva at 14.6%). Nearly 59% of Bear Lake students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a higher rate than Sabal Point (34%) and Wekiva (36.5%), but lower than Spring Lake Elementary School (84.95%) in Seminole County.

The most striking issue is a persistent weakness in 5th grade math, with only 32% of students proficient in 2025-2026—far below the state average of 62% and dramatically lower than Forest City Elementary School (63%), which serves a higher-poverty population (75.82%). This three-year trend (10%, 23%, 32%) contrasts sharply with Bear Lake’s 6th grade math scores, where 98% of students are proficient, suggesting a possible curriculum or instruction gap in 5th grade. Spending per student ($9,963) is mid-range and not correlated with performance, as higher-spending schools like Lockhart ($15,221) perform worse, while Sabal Point ($9,653) excels.

Open Quote Bear Lake Elementary is an excellent school with wonderful, caring teachers and staff. My son has excelled there with straight A's, and we plan to keep him there until he reaches middle school. Even though I now have a long drive due to my new job, the education he is receiving at Bear Lake is worth the sacrifice of staying in our current home and commuting. I highly recommend this school.
