Summary

Fairmount Park Elementary School in St. Petersburg, FL, is a public school serving 425 students in grades PK-5 within the Pinellas County School District, located in a high-poverty area where 84.71% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has faced significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 5% of Florida elementary schools for nearly a decade, though recent data shows a slight improvement to a 1-star rating (23rd percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year.

Academic performance at Fairmount Park is notably lower than nearby schools. For example, in 5th-grade math, only 32% of students were proficient, compared to 55% at Douglas L. Jamerson Junior Elementary (0.7 miles away) and 65% at Lakeview Fundamental Elementary (1.85 miles away). In 3rd-grade English Language Arts, Fairmount Park scored 45% proficient, while Bear Creek Elementary (1.61 miles) achieved 76% and Douglas L. Jamerson reached 80%. A critical issue is chronic absenteeism, which stood at 48.9% in 2023-2024—nearly double the district average of 30.6% and far higher than Douglas L. Jamerson's 13.3% or Perkins Elementary's 16.1%. This absenteeism crisis is strongly linked to the school's academic struggles.

Despite spending $19,550 per student—over $8,000 more than James B. Sanderlin K-8 ($11,046) and significantly more than Lakeview Fundamental ($13,766) and Douglas L. Jamerson ($13,440)—Fairmount Park has not seen proportional academic gains. However, there is a bright spot: 5th-grade science scores have improved dramatically, from 27% proficiency in 2022-2023 to 70% in 2025-2026, matching the district average and exceeding the state average of 60%. This suggests that targeted strategies in science could serve as a model for improvement in other subjects, but the school's primary challenge remains getting students to attend class consistently.

Open Quote The front office staff is not at all approachable they talk at you and not too you about your children the programs they offer no real help to the children there they have 534 students and at 15000 dollars a child these kids don't have a fighting chance my son has just been passed along and they offer no services to him although he has issues reading and with following along they treat these kids like they are in a prison and they have to just monitor them they need a whole overhaul of administration and then the teachers will be happier to teach there kids and maybe a field trip or two would be great Close Quote
