Summary

Largo Middle School in Largo, FL, serves 752 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Pinellas school district, a high-performing district ranked in the top 25% of Florida. Despite this, the school itself has consistently ranked in the bottom third of Florida middle schools over the past decade, currently sitting at the 22nd percentile. Over half of its students (54.9%) are eligible for free or reduced lunch, indicating significant economic disadvantage, and the school has a chronic absenteeism rate of 34.7%—higher than the district and state averages.

The most striking differentiator is the school's performance in 7th-grade math, where only 10% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year. This is far below the state average (53%) and the lowest among nearby schools, including Dunedin Highland Middle School (73rd percentile) and Seminole Middle School (69th percentile). However, the school shows a remarkable paradox: students in advanced courses like Algebra 1 and Geometry achieve 86% and 90% proficiency, respectively, far exceeding district and state averages. This suggests the school effectively accelerates a small group of students while the majority struggles with the standard curriculum.

Interestingly, Largo Middle School spends $11,134 per student—higher than many higher-performing neighbors like Safety Harbor Middle School ($9,798) and Clearwater Fundamental Middle School ($9,019). This indicates that low performance is not due to a lack of funding but rather how resources are allocated. The contrast with Clearwater Fundamental, just 4.8 miles away, is stark: Clearwater has a 5.8% chronic absenteeism rate and scores in the 95th percentile, while Largo has a 34.7% absenteeism rate and scores in the 22nd percentile. This comparison strongly suggests that student engagement and attendance are primary drivers of the performance gap.

Open Quote My daughter enrolled in the IB program that started at LMS this past year. I was hesitant to allow her to attend because of the reviews; but changed my mind after visiting the school a few times and watching the students interactions with each other. I am so glad I did as this was the best year she has ever had in school. The teachers and staff were great; the principal and vice principle are very caring and involved. The music department is outstanding. She really enjoyed the year and is very excited about 2016/2017! All I can say is don't be put off by the low test scores; if you are a motivated student you will do well. The school has a lot of lower income and English as second language students who struggle. However, from what I have seen, the schools really works with these students to encourage and motivate them. That is something a lot of schools do not do as they are only worried about the test scores and try to push out any student who cannot help the scores. Largo Middle School staff actually cares much more about the students and strives to help them all; they are not just concerned about test scores. They seem to understand the difficulty many students in this demographic have with standardized tests. I knew we had made the right choice when my daughter came home after the first month or so and said "I LOVE MIDDLE SCHOOL"! By the way, she scored a 5 on the FSA in both ELA and MATH. Close Quote

Open Quote Not sure if this is where I'm supposed to post, but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

My two grandsons were not allowed to walk in their graduation ceremony today because they had on jeans ( clean, pressed & golf like shirts ) One of them was supposed to get two awards. How do you think that made him feel ? Meanwhile there were children there in shorts & tee shirts. & girls looking like they were going to a nite club. When we went to the office to see if they would make an exception, they flat out said NO. The one woman we spoke to had on jeans & when we said " you have on jeans " her response was 'AND ' very rude !
There were also other office personnel wearing flip flops. We again asked " shouldn't you be setting an example, if the children have to dress a certain way, shouldn't the staff also ?
They said an emphatic NO ! Again rude...
There was NEVER a letter sent home telling them how to dress for graduation, just to look presentable, which they were. More so than the ones in shorts & tee shirts & nite club dresses.
My grandsons were embarrassed & upset. After all it was the last day of school & their last day in that school. ( Largo Middle ) They also never got to call anyone to bring them other pants either until right before the ceremony started. Someone needs to address this problem. If they are supposed to wear certain things then parents should be informed or have them wear cap & gown. They talk about Children first, well this school obviously DOES NOT put the Children First.
To let them leave there without graduating with classmates they have been going to school with for three years, it's humiliating & not very good for self esteem. I think they owe these & the other children they sent home a huge apology. They will never get that graduation back again !
I for one am appalled at such behavior by adults that are supposed to be shaping our youth & teaching them right from wrong. This was clearly WRONG in every sense of the word.
