Summary

Freedom High in Orlando, FL, is a large traditional public high school serving over 2,500 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Orange district. The school's most impressive strength is its near-perfect graduation rate of 98.9% for the 2024-2025 school year, which significantly outpaces both the district (92.7%) and state (92.2%) averages and is higher than nearby schools like Cypress Creek High (96.6%) and Oak Ridge High (95.9%). However, this success is contrasted by a major challenge: chronic absenteeism affects 44.8% of students, which is dramatically higher than the state average of 31.4% and nearly double the rate at Cornerstone Charter Academy High (24.7%), located just 4.8 miles away.

Academic performance at Freedom High presents a mixed picture. While the school performs at or slightly below district and state averages in core subjects like Algebra 1 (61%) and English Language Arts (59-60%), it shows a notable strength in Biology 1 (76%), where it outperforms the state average (74%). The comparison with Cornerstone Charter Academy High, which holds a 4-star rating and achieves significantly higher scores in subjects like 9th Grade ELA (83% vs. 59%), suggests that Freedom's academic struggles may be closely tied to its attendance issues. The school has maintained a consistent 3-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past decade, indicating stable, average performance relative to other Florida high schools.

An interesting recent development is the rapid demographic shift at Freedom High, with the percentage of students eligible for free/reduced lunch dropping from 53.26% in 2022-2023 to 26.4% in 2024-2025—now lower than nearby schools like Oak Ridge High (58.4%) and Cypress Creek High (34.35%). The school's per-student spending of $9,332 is in the middle of the pack for the area, suggesting that funding alone isn't the determining factor for success. For parents, the key takeaway is that Freedom High excels at ensuring enrolled students graduate, but the high absenteeism rate points to underlying issues with student engagement that may be holding back academic performance.

Open Quote I think our school is great, our teacher's are amazing, the students are accepting, everyone pretty much is like a family. There isn't really a lot of bullying, and when there is, it's a school against a person, we protect our own. Parents don't seem to understand that school is just as much about experience as grades. Grades aren't worth being scarred for the rest of your life. We all pretty much have higher standards, in my class 9th graders with Algebra 1 were the minority. Close Quote
