Summary

Apopka Elementary is a mid-sized public school in Apopka, FL, serving 847 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Orange County school district, and it has recently seen a notable decline in its state ranking to the 32nd percentile (2 stars) for the 2025-2026 school year.

This school faces significant challenges, particularly in math, where proficiency rates (49-55% across grades 3-5) fall well below both district and state averages. In contrast, nearby Wolf Lake Elementary exceeds those averages in every math grade level. Chronic absenteeism is also a growing concern, rising from 13.7% in 2019-2020 to 22.8% in 2023-2024, which is higher than top-performing neighbors like Kelly Park School (15.4%) and Wolf Lake Elementary (17.8%). However, there is a bright spot: 5th-grade science proficiency at Apopka Elementary (61%) is above the state average (60%), suggesting an effective program or teacher that could serve as a model for improvement in other subjects.

Interestingly, the data reveals a stark performance gap between schools in the Orange County district and those just across the county line in the Seminole County district, such as Bear Lake Elementary and Wekiva Elementary, which consistently rank higher (3-4 stars). Additionally, higher spending does not guarantee better results—Dream Lake Elementary spends the most per student ($13,303) but ranks lower than Wolf Lake Elementary, which spends less ($11,690) and performs better. For parents, this means that while Apopka Elementary has clear areas for growth, its challenges are shared by many Orange County schools, and its science success offers a hopeful sign for future progress.

Open Quote The principal Roxanne Paulsen is wonderful. She gets to know each of her students names and makes sure she is involved in everything they do. The teachers are exceptional. My son is special needs and she makes sure that she places him with a teacher that is suitable for his needs. My daughter who is the opposite of my son is also placed with a wonderul teacher. The school provides several things for their students that are lacking academically and make sure the parent involvement is there. Wonderful school. Close Quote
