Summary

Callahan Middle School in Callahan, FL, is a public school serving 704 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the highly-rated Nassau County School District, which ranks among the top in the state. Over the past decade, the school has shown remarkable improvement, climbing from a 3-star rating to a 5-star rating, now ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide. This makes it a standout option for families in the area, especially when compared to nearby schools in the Duval County district, many of which struggle with lower academic performance.

One of the most impressive features of Callahan Middle School is its exceptional math proficiency. In 6th and 7th grades, math scores reach 96% and 98%, far exceeding the state average of around 60%. The school also excels in advanced coursework, with near-perfect scores on the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam (97-99%) and strong Civics results (90%). These achievements are particularly striking when compared to nearby schools like Joseph Stilwell Middle School and Jean Ribault Middle School, which have much lower proficiency rates. Even within its own district, Callahan slightly outperforms Yulee Middle School in most subjects, despite serving a student body with a higher percentage of students on free or reduced lunch.

While Callahan Middle School is a top performer, it does have areas for growth. Its 8th-grade science proficiency, at 69%, is above the state average but below its own district average, suggesting a potential focus area. Additionally, chronic absenteeism at 40.9% is higher than the state average, though it is significantly lower than many Duval County schools, such as Highlands Middle School (59.5%) and The Bridge To Success Academy Middle School (81.6%). Overall, Callahan Middle School achieves strong academic outcomes with efficient resource use, spending less per student than many lower-performing schools in the region, making it a smart choice for families seeking a high-quality middle school education.

Open Quote As a parent and former student I have great concern for my child's welfare at this school. My child suffers bullying everyday and nothing is done about it. When my child stands up for herself she gets in trouble by the administrator. It is a very messed up system with no accountability for racism and bullying. I would not recommend this school to anyone. So disappointed because I had a positive experience here. Close Quote
