Summary

Oasis Middle School in Bradenton, FL, is a very small public school serving just 49 students in grades 6-8 within the Manatee district, and it has achieved a remarkable turnaround to become a top-performing school despite serving a high-poverty community where over 71% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

What makes Oasis Middle School truly stand out is its extraordinary academic performance, which defies expectations. In the most recent school year, the school achieved 100% proficiency in Algebra 1 and Civics, and 88% proficiency in 8th Grade Science—scores that dramatically exceed district and state averages. This success is even more impressive when compared to nearby schools with similar demographics. For instance, W. D. Sugg Middle School, just two miles away, has a slightly lower poverty rate but ranks in the bottom 7th percentile statewide, while Oasis ranks in the 89th percentile. The school has also shown incredible growth over the past decade, jumping from a 1-star rating in 2015-2016 to a 4-star rating today—a feat unmatched by any neighboring school. This success is likely fueled by high per-pupil spending ($13,043 per student) and a very low student-to-teacher ratio of 16.3:1, allowing for personalized instruction that larger schools like Buffalo Creek Middle School (1,171 students) cannot offer.

Interestingly, Oasis Middle School achieves these results despite a significant challenge: a chronic absenteeism rate of 48.2%, which is much higher than the district average of 29.4%. This paradox suggests that the school’s focused academic culture and targeted support for students who are present are highly effective. In fact, Oasis is competitive with magnet schools like the Sarasota School Of Arts/Sciences in the Sarasota district, which ranks in the 88th percentile but serves a much wealthier population. For parents, Oasis Middle School represents a beacon of hope—a small, dedicated school that proves high poverty does not have to mean low performance.

Open Quote Extremely high turnover rate. Lost 4 teachers just in the 18-19 school year alone. Poor communication between staff and parents. Lack of consistency. I went to Oasis Middle School because I thought the smaller size would help, but the exact opposite happened. Highly disorganized. Save yourself, go somewhere else. Close Quote
