Summary

Middleton High School is a large, urban high school in Tampa, FL, serving 1,637 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Hillsborough County School District, with nearly half of its students coming from low-income households.

Middleton stands out for its exceptional performance in English Language Arts (ELA), where 66% of 10th graders and 68% of 9th graders are proficient—well above district and state averages and outperforming nearby comprehensive schools like Chamberlain High School and King High School. However, the school faces a critical challenge with chronic absenteeism, as 50.3% of students were chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year—nearly double the district and state averages. This absenteeism likely contributes to a major weakness in Algebra 1, where only 24% of students are proficient, far below the district and state averages of 63%. In contrast, the school performs at or above average in Biology 1 (70%) and US History (74%).

Encouragingly, Middleton appears to be on an upward trajectory. Its state ranking improved from the 46th percentile (2 stars) in 2024-2025 to the 59th percentile (3 stars) in 2025-2026, and its graduation rate rose from 79.6% to 86.8% over the same period. For comparison, the nearby Tampa Bay Technical High School boasts a 99.1% graduation rate and much lower absenteeism (29.2%), despite spending less per student and serving a similar percentage of low-income students. This suggests that Middleton’s challenges are not insurmountable, and addressing absenteeism could be the key to unlocking further gains. For families prioritizing a strong humanities education, Middleton offers a compelling option that outshines its immediate neighbors in ELA, while its math struggles highlight an area for potential growth.

Open Quote I opened Middleton Magnet HS in 2002 after spending 39 years in the latest digital electronic hardware and software technology.from TS cryptography through decades of Miniaturization. The students in Computer and Network classes were physically involved in their education, by rebuilding hundreds of donated computers and getting them into the hands of those who would use them for educational purposes. We introduced video security cameras into the school after a tense meeting with the School District. The students installed 8 cameras in the classroom and set up cameras in other teachers rooms. The student performance in state and national competition ( Skills USA and FBLA) was multi-championships. The students opened their own computer repair companies and stepped into the Cyber-security industry. They learned because they were hands-on involved and I respect them and their families for the time and energy spent making them the best they can be. They are the best. Close Quote
