Summary

Lewis Elementary School in Temple Terrace, FL, serves 546 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Hillsborough County School District, but it is currently facing significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 5% of all elementary schools in Florida.

Lewis Elementary has experienced a steep decline over the past decade, dropping from the 44th percentile in 2017-2018 to the 4th percentile in the most recent data, and it now holds a 0-star rating. The school serves a predominantly low-income community, with 64.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. A critical issue driving its low performance is a severe chronic absenteeism crisis, with a rate of 38.4% for the 2023-2024 school year. This is significantly higher than the district and state averages, and more than double the rate at nearby high-performing schools like Riverhills Elementary Magnet School (14.5%) and Dr. Kiran C. Patel Elementary School (18.4%). Interestingly, Lewis Elementary spends more per student ($13,248) than these higher-performing neighbors, and its student-teacher ratio (14.1:1) is favorable, suggesting that funding and class size are not the primary barriers to improvement.

Despite the overall struggles, there is a small bright spot: 51% of Lewis Elementary 3rd graders were proficient in math in the most recent year, a notable improvement from 40% the year before, though still below state averages. The school's performance is comparable to other low-performing schools in the immediate area, such as Thonotosassa Elementary School (4th percentile) and Temple Terrace Elementary School (5th percentile), but it is dramatically outperformed by schools less than two miles away, like Dr. Kiran C. Patel Elementary (95th percentile). This stark divide highlights that without a community-wide effort to address chronic absenteeism and its root causes, reversing the school's downward trajectory will remain a significant challenge.

Open Quote This school has consistently gone down hill over the last 3-4 years. The AGP program is now nonexistent. Very disappointed in the changes from when my son was in kindergarten to now 5th grade. Close Quote
