Summary

Anderson Elementary School is a small, PK-5 public school in South Tampa, Florida, serving 221 students within the Hillsborough district. Historically a solid 3-star school, Anderson has experienced a sharp decline in recent years, dropping to a 1-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year and ranking in the 25th percentile statewide. This downward trend is especially notable when compared to nearby schools like Mabry Elementary School, Grady Elementary School, and Roosevelt Elementary School, which consistently rank among the top 3% of Florida elementary schools with 5-star ratings.

A critical area of concern is Anderson’s 5th-grade math proficiency, which fell to just 32% in the 2025-2026 school year—far below the district average of 58% and the state average of 62%. This is a dramatic drop from the school’s relative strength in 4th-grade math, where 68% of students were proficient, outperforming the district. In contrast, nearby schools like Mabry (88%), Grady (98%), and Ballast Point Elementary School (71%) show much stronger 5th-grade math results. Additionally, Anderson spends $15,765 per student—higher than top-performing neighbors like Mabry ($11,508) and Roosevelt ($11,016)—yet this investment has not translated into competitive academic outcomes.

Chronic absenteeism is another growing challenge, with a rate of 29.0% in 2023-2024, significantly higher than the 5.7% rate at Mabry and 6.5% at Roosevelt. The school’s small size can allow for personalized attention, but it also limits resources compared to larger schools like Mitchell Elementary School (698 students) and Roosevelt (614 students). Anderson’s future success will likely depend on targeted interventions in 5th-grade math, a school-wide focus on improving attendance, and a strategic review of how its substantial budget is being used.

Open Quote This past school year, 2011-2012, I had a child in 5th as well as in kindergarten. I would not be able to say enough about this school! For starters my kindergartener had an amazing teacher! They worked so hard for preparation for 1st grade and focused of reading and math as well as other things! My child was reading well beyond some first graders, I have no doubt that she will be more prepared for 1st than most children, including my older child when she went into 1st! My 5th grader, was in gifted, even though they changed the gifted program, she still excelled and even made STEM for 6th grade! Her teacher has been there for over 20 years and was very patient and knew exactly how to handle all the different personalities that 11year old boys and girls have. Our 5th grade banquet and ceremonies were perfect thanks to the help with the other parents and including the staff! Mr. Holley, our principle knew the regular parents that volunteed making us feel we were actually a part if the school! We were welcome to eat breakfast and lunch with our children, we had the option to volunteer as much as we wanted, as well as participate in field trips and school functions! Our music program was fun for the kids, it wasn't too controlling allowing the kids to excel in their true talents and actually made them more excited and willing to participate! This was a home for our kids, a safe haven! As sad as I am that I'm loosing a child to another school, I'm grateful that I have another one still attending!! This is the only school my children have attended and I'm grateful I had the chance to have my child start at one school and follow through till the end! Close Quote
