Summary

Cork Elementary School in Plant City, FL, serves 715 students in grades PK-5 within the Hillsborough County School District, where 58% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has experienced a significant decline in academic performance over recent years, dropping from the 49th percentile statewide in 2019 to the 18th percentile in 2026, making it a 1-star school. This downward trend is particularly concerning because Cork has a relatively low chronic absenteeism rate of 23.9%, which is well below the district average of 31.3% and much lower than nearby schools like Wilson Elementary School (34.9%) and Jackson Elementary School (33.5%). This suggests that while students are showing up to class consistently, the school is struggling to translate attendance into academic growth.

Math proficiency is a critical weakness, especially in 4th and 5th grades. Cork's 4th-grade math score of 42% lags behind Bryan Elementary School (61%) and Knights Elementary School (48%), while its 5th-grade math score of 44% is far below Knights (61%) and Bryan (55%). The school's per-student spending of $11,784 is lower than many high-poverty neighbors, such as Jackson ($14,794) and Burney Elementary School ($17,656), which may impact resources for intervention programs. A bright spot is 3rd-grade ELA, which has improved from 35% to 50% over three years, approaching the district average of 55%.

Nearby Lincoln Elementary Magnet School offers a stark contrast, achieving a 3-star rating and 70th percentile ranking despite similar spending levels. Lincoln outperforms Cork in every subject, with 4th-grade ELA at 68% versus Cork's 44%. Cork's traditional strength in 5th grade is fading, with math dropping from 57% (2022-2023) to 44% and science from 50% to 46%, both now below district averages. Without significant changes in instructional strategy or resource allocation, the school's downward trajectory may continue.

Open Quote I love this school. My daughter came from another state and started at Limona Elementary for 1st grade. They changed her teacher within 2 weeks without any notice and the teacher never sent work home or spelling test to let me know how she was doing. Then we had to move her in the middle of the year to Cork and it was the best thing for her. Her reading and writing went up and she continued after her first grading period to bring up her N's to S and E's. She stayed an Honor Roll student and by last grading period had all E's and 1 S. She also was Cougar of the month. I never want to move because I'm scared there is no other school better then Cork. The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. Teachers stay in contact with the parents to let you know whats going on and what your child needs help with. My daughter likes her teacher so much she even writes about her in her daily journal at school and I believe that says a lot about the way teachers treat our children, with love and encouragement.
