Summary

Advantage Academy Of Hillsborough is a public charter school in Plant City, FL, serving 457 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade within the Hillsborough district, and it currently faces a significant academic challenge after a sharp decline in performance.

This school stands out for its unique PK-8 grade configuration, which allows students to stay through middle school, unlike nearby elementary schools such as Cork Elementary School or Walden Lake Elementary School. However, the most critical issue is a dramatic drop in state ranking, falling from the 49th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 15th percentile in the most recent data. This decline is especially severe in middle school grades, where only 4% of 8th graders were proficient in Science and 9% in Math, compared to district averages of 50% and 62%, respectively. This "middle school cliff" is a major concern, as the school previously excelled in advanced subjects like Algebra 1 and Civics. On a positive note, the school has a strong record of low chronic absenteeism at 16.4%, which is nearly half the district average and much better than nearby schools like Wilson Elementary School (34.9%) and Jackson Elementary School (33.5%).

Another key differentiator is the school's spending per student, which at $9,127 is significantly lower than all comparable schools, such as Burney Elementary School ($17,656) and Robinson Elementary School ($15,279). While this financial efficiency is notable, the recent academic collapse raises questions about whether lower spending is impacting instruction and teacher retention. The school is at a crossroads, needing to diagnose the root causes of its post-2024 decline and implement targeted interventions, particularly in 7th and 8th grade Math and Science, to reverse the trend and build on its past strengths.

Open Quote As hard as we tried and as long as we were on the "wait list" to get our child in.,we are very unhappy to this point of the year.,our child is unhappy, not motivated unlike in public school.the staff is rude and unthoughtful.we hope to be back in public school next year Close Quote

Open Quote Obviously the other parent review is a hoax.....how can 45 students and two teachers in 800 square feet of space be a "small private school atmosphere"? They had to remove that line from the sign outside the school recently because that is just not the case. This is how it has been since the last school year when Charter School Associates decided to put profits over people and cram as many children as they could in one physical space and still obey the fire code. This school has no school psychologist or guidance counselor for students, pre-packaged, disgusting food for lunch because it doesn't have a kitchen in the building it calls the cafeteria. It shoves two teachers in the same classroom and calls it "co-teaching" - but they regularly leave 1 teacher with 30+ kids. If you care about your kids, you won't send them here. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has attended since the school has opened 3 years ago. Even with the change of Principals - my daughter has had consistency with her Teachers and the management/rules of the school and how it is ran. She is in a smaller/private school type atmosphere. I love the idea of uniforms and my daughter being able to move at her pace - whether she needs more assitance with her reading or if she is excelling in her Math. Close Quote
