Summary

Ballast Point Elementary School is a mid-sized, high-performing PK-5 school in Tampa's South Tampa neighborhood, serving 408 students within the Hillsborough School District and consistently earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Ballast Point stands out for its exceptional student engagement and efficient use of resources. Its chronic absenteeism rate is just 10.9%, dramatically lower than the district average of 31.3% and far better than nearby schools like Chiaramonte Elementary (34.5%) and Westshore Elementary (33.5%). This rate is more in line with top-tier schools like Mabry Elementary (5.7%) and Roosevelt Elementary (6.5%), indicating a highly stable and involved community. The school also offers a notably low student-to-teacher ratio of 12.9:1, which is smaller than many of its high-performing peers, including Mabry (15:1) and Grady Elementary (15.5:1). While its state ranking has slipped from a 5-star peak, its actual test scores remain strong and stable, with math being a particular strength—4th-grade math proficiency hit 81% in 2024-2025, a full 22 points above the district average.

Geographically, Ballast Point acts as a "bridge" school in a polarized neighborhood. It is sandwiched between the struggling Chiaramonte Elementary (2-star rating) and the elite Roosevelt Elementary (5-star rating). For parents, Ballast Point offers a compelling value proposition: it delivers academic results consistently 15-20 points above district averages, similar to the elite schools, but with smaller class sizes and a more diverse socioeconomic environment. This makes it an excellent alternative for families seeking a high-quality education without the intense competition or higher housing costs often associated with the top-ranked schools.

Open Quote My son started there in the ASD classes last year, and has been mainstreamed for about a month so far, and counting. The teachers challenge him & keep him on his toes, which is good. The school itself get 5 stars, hands down. The HOST program after school, however, would get 0-1 stars. The expectations from kids as young as 4 & 5 years old is unrealistic, and kids are being kicked out permanently on a fairly regular basis. Lord help you if your child has special needs, as they are unflexible (even if you have an IEP), and inept under their new management this year, at best. At worst, they have no business being around young kids. Close Quote
