Summary

Hunter's Green Elementary School in Tampa, FL, is a public school serving 788 students in grades PK through 5, part of the Hillsborough district, and has achieved a remarkable turnaround from a 2-star rating to consistent 4-star and 5-star performance, now ranking in the 81st percentile of Florida elementary schools.

This school stands out for its exceptional academic performance across all subjects, consistently outperforming both district and state averages. For example, 3rd-grade math proficiency is 82%, compared to 60% for the district and 66% for the state, while 5th-grade science reaches 70% versus 55% for the district and 60% for the state. Math is a particular strength, with scores often 13-16 points above state averages. The school also boasts a low and improving chronic absenteeism rate of 22.9%, significantly better than the district and state averages of 31.3% and 31.4%, respectively. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Tampa Palms Elementary (30.4%) and Heritage Elementary (28.8%), which struggle with higher absenteeism. Additionally, the school has a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 23.48%, the second-lowest among nearby schools.

While Hunter's Green is a strong performer, it is not the top school in its immediate area. Pride Elementary, located just 1.35 miles away, consistently ranks in the 93rd-94th percentile and outperforms Hunter's Green in nearly every subject, particularly in 5th-grade ELA (83% vs. 72%) and 5th-grade Math (87% vs. 75%). This creates an interesting dynamic for families who may have a choice between two excellent schools. It's also worth noting that Hunter's Green achieves its high results with relatively lower per-student spending ($12,414) and a moderate student-teacher ratio (14.7:1), suggesting effective teaching practices and a strong school culture are key drivers of its success. A slight dip in recent rankings from the 92nd to the 81st percentile is worth monitoring, but the school's overall trajectory remains very positive.

Open Quote The school grade is not reflective of what an amazing school Hunter's Green is. Three of my children have attended Hunter's Green and all have thrived there. It is a wonderful, caring place, where children get a great education and have a lot of enrichment opportunities. Close Quote

Open Quote My son attended kindergarten and now in 1st grade at HG and we could not be happier. It really is a great school. Of course you will have a parent here and there that doesn't get their way but that is at every school. I was nervous at first but decided I needed to give it a chance myself. We live in the community and could not be happier as he is learning so much and he loves his teachers. The teachers and staff are amazing and caring. Our other son will be starting at HG next year and I'm so happy to have them in a great community school. Close Quote
