Summary

Explorer K-8 is a public elementary and middle school located in Spring Hill, Florida, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 1,578 students. The school is part of the Hernando District, which is ranked 48 out of 67 districts in Florida and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Despite some academic strengths, such as high proficiency rates in Algebra 1 and Geometry that exceed the district and state averages, Explorer K-8 consistently underperforms the Hernando District and Florida state averages in most subject areas and grade levels, with proficiency rates often 10-20 percentage points below the district and state. The school also faces challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 30.9% to 42.9% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, Explorer K-8 has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 68.77% to 75.48% over the past few years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite these challenges, Explorer K-8 has seen a steady increase in per-student spending, from $8,934 in 2020-2021 to $10,688 in 2023-2024, which is higher than the state average. The school also maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.7 to 15.2 over the past few years, which is lower than the state average. These investments in resources and staffing suggest that the school may be working to address the unique needs of its student population and improve academic outcomes.

Open Quote Most teachers and administration aren't dealing with the children appropriately. They are not nice to children or their parents. If your child gets in some kind of trouble ( or just sent to an office) they have the child in an office with a administrator, they have your child write a statement like they are in a police station. A statement that can be used against them and be prosecuted , without the parents knowledge. At times to intimidate the child they will have a police officer in the office. The parents aren't aware of whats going on with their child. The students aren't given their rights. No child should be left alone with an administrator or policeman to write out a legal statement without their parents present. Close Quote
