Summary

Coconut Creek High School is a large traditional public high school in the Broward County School District, serving approximately 1,972 students in grades 9-12 in Coconut Creek, FL, and has consistently ranked in the bottom 30th percentile of Florida high schools over the past decade.

The most critical issue at Coconut Creek High is chronic absenteeism, with 48.6% of students missing significant school in 2023-2024—nearly 1.5 times the state average. This directly correlates with low academic proficiency: only 41% of students are proficient in Algebra 1 and 40% in 9th Grade ELA, rates significantly lower than nearby Coral Springs High School (65% and 57%, respectively). Interestingly, the school has shown a volatile but positive trend in graduation rates, reaching 93.3% in 2024-2025—above both district and state averages. This creates a contradictory picture: the school is successfully pushing students to graduate, yet a majority are not mastering core academic skills, suggesting a focus on completion over proficiency. A relative bright spot is US History, where 73% of students are proficient, nearly matching state averages and outperforming Monarch High School (72%).

What makes Coconut Creek High particularly interesting is its location. It shares a parking lot with Broward Virtual Franchise, a 5-star school with a 98.7% graduation rate and near-zero chronic absenteeism, and is just 0.6 miles from Atlantic Technical College, a top-20 school in the state. This proximity highlights that the school's challenges are not purely geographic but tied to its specific culture and programs. Additionally, the percentage of students eligible for free/reduced lunch dropped dramatically from 72.46% to 45.44% in just two years, yet this improvement has not translated into higher test scores or lower absenteeism. The school also spends less per student ($8,573) than all nearby traditional high schools, including Blanche Ely High School ($10,622) and Monarch High School ($9,950), despite its high needs.

Open Quote I graduated Coconut Creek High School in the late 80s, when it was fully desegregated. They had started slowly re-segregating the school even while I attended it, but it started in earnest in the 90s. Now the school's enrollment is over 90% minority, and over 70% economically-disadvantaged. Such is the way school boards in Florida are now allowed to operate--as if the the ghost of George Wallace (the old, racist one, not the one whose attempted assassination left him paralyzed and with a new, colorblind attitude) were running things.

It is devastatingly sad to hear that new teachers refuse to apply to teach there, and those assigned there either quit outright, or last a handful of months before asking for a transfer or simply walking away from teaching altogether.

The School Boards of the State of Florida are working as hard as hey can to destroy the lives of the two most vulnerable groups in the school system: underprivileged minority students, and new teachers. Shame especially on the School Board of Broward County, whose board is among the worst offenders--right behind Pinellas County. Close Quote
