Summary

Margate Middle School in Margate, FL, serves 927 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Broward school district, which ranks in the 67th percentile statewide.

Margate Middle presents a unique "two schools" paradox. On one hand, its advanced students achieve exceptional results on End-of-Course (EOC) exams, with proficiency rates of 90% in Algebra 1, 96% in Geometry, and 93% in Biology 1—scores that rival top-performing nearby schools like Coral Springs Middle and Ramblewood Middle. On the other hand, the general student population struggles significantly, with standard grade-level proficiency rates well below district and state averages—for example, only 31% in 8th Grade Science and 40% in 6th Grade Math. This stark contrast suggests that resources may be heavily concentrated on the advanced track, leaving many students behind. The school's overall state ranking is 972 out of 1,216 (20th percentile), earning it a 1-star rating.

Despite these academic challenges, Margate Middle has achieved a remarkable turnaround in chronic absenteeism, dropping from 25.2% in 2022-2023 to just 2.3% in 2023-2024—far lower than any nearby school, including Somerset Academy Riverside Charter Middle (9.8%) and James S. Rickards Middle (37.6%). The school has also seen a rapid decline in economic disadvantage, with free/reduced lunch eligibility dropping from 77.3% to 49.6% in just two years. While spending per student ($11,358) and student-teacher ratio (19.3) are average, the school's performance gap compared to its closest neighbor, Ramblewood Middle (a 3-star school with 33.7% free/reduced lunch), highlights the strong correlation between poverty and academic outcomes. A bright spot is Civics, where Margate's 62% proficiency is closer to the district average (77%) than in other subjects.

Open Quote It is a great school. It is number one in the nation in Vocabulary.com It has an award winning STEM program as well as a great band and wonderful Spanish program. The Spanish program and 10 other courses offer HS credit. It is a Title One School but it is quite good in comparison to most. Close Quote
