Summary

West Middle School is a small public school in Colorado Springs, CO, serving 119 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Colorado Springs School District No. 11, and it is currently facing significant challenges with a 1-star rating and a 10th percentile statewide rank for the 2024-2025 school year.

The most pressing issue at West Middle School is a severe chronic absenteeism crisis, with 52.2% of students missing too much school—a rate that is nearly double the state average of 28.4% and the highest among nearby district peers like Holmes Middle School (41.3%) and North Middle School (50.4%). This attendance problem is likely driving the school’s dramatic academic decline, as test scores have plummeted to critically low levels. For example, only 10.3% of students are proficient in math, compared to 31.1% district-wide and 35.9% statewide, and just 18.7% are proficient in English Language Arts, far below the district average of 38.9%. The school’s overall ranking has dropped from a 3-star rating in 2017-2018 to its current 1-star status, marking the lowest performance in a decade.

Despite these struggles, West Middle School has a notable advantage: a very low student-teacher ratio of 10:1, which is much smaller than higher-performing schools like Eagleview Middle School (16.9:1) and Cheyenne Mountain Junior High School (16.5:1). This small class size could allow for more individualized attention, but it is not translating into academic success due to the attendance crisis. The school also has a history of strong performance with Gifted and Talented students, ranking in the 98th percentile in 2017-2018, though recent data is unavailable. For parents, the key takeaway is that West Middle School has the potential for improvement, but it must first address the fundamental barrier of getting students to attend school regularly.

Open Quote I attended this school while it was simply "West Middle School." This school offered a Space and Technology class which was always a favorite of the students. The teachers were really dedicated to making sure students never fell behind, and always made time to help any student that asked. Close Quote
