Summary

Daniel J. Savage Middle is a public middle school serving about 900 students in grades 6-8 within the Sylvan Union Elementary school district in Modesto, CA.

The school shows notable academic strengths, particularly in English Language Arts, where its proficiency rate is higher than both the district and state averages and outperforms many nearby schools like Somerset Middle and Mark Twain Junior High. Math and science scores are closer to average, but it's important to note that the school achieves these results with significantly less funding per student than many neighboring schools in other districts. While the school's statewide ranking has declined from its historical highs, it still performs well relative to its local peers, especially considering over half of its students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Key areas for families to consider include a chronic absenteeism rate that is higher than the state average, though it is lower than at some comparable schools. Performance varies across different student groups, with some groups performing very well and others, such as Asian and multi-racial students, showing much lower proficiency. Compared to its sister school in the same district, Elizabeth Ustach Middle, Savage has stronger English scores but lags in math and science, a gap that coincides with Ustach's notably lower absenteeism rate.

Open Quote Look beyond the walls of beauty from this new school as there are cracks every where. Bullying, drugs, fights with no supervision within sight, and poor staff communication to name a few. There is very little leadership and to much passing the buck on issues. The administrative staff can't see through their own bureaucracy and lost sight of the true victims; the children.
