Summary

John Adams Middle is a public school serving 806 students in grades 6-8 within the high-performing Santa Monica-Malibu Unified district in Santa Monica, CA.

Academically, the school consistently outperforms California state averages, with 63% of students proficient in English, 49% in math, and 44% in science. It shows particular strength in supporting specific student groups, with its African American, White, and special education students ranking in the state's top percentiles. The school also manages chronic absenteeism well at 14%, which is better than both its district and the state. However, within its own district, it lags behind nearby Lincoln Middle, which scores significantly higher across all subjects despite similar resources.

Compared to other nearby schools in different districts, John Adams presents a mixed picture. It performs similarly to some schools in the Los Angeles Unified district that serve students with greater economic need, like ICEF Vista Middle Academy. Yet, it is outperformed by others with similar student populations, such as Paul Revere Charter Middle, though that school has a much higher chronic absenteeism rate. Overall, John Adams Middle is a stable, solid-performing school that effectively serves a diverse community within a competitive educational landscape.

Open Quote JAMS, like all SMMUSD schools, has an amazing music program. Imagine a *middle* school with 3 bands, 3 orchestras and 3 choirs. The best of these groups would do any high school (besides SAMOHI) proud. The music program is the one bright spot in a school that, at best, isn't for everyone. Indeed, I'd give the school one star but for the music program. The highest achieving children of high-achieving parents with the luck to have developed the social skills and physical strength to navigate an unkind, ill-supervised "Lord of the Flies" social setting do well at JAMS. For the rest, there ain't much besides discouragement plus the odd bump and scrape or two. The biggest problem is the staff's bureaucratic manner. Eg, I tried to get a counselor to help me manage my 6th-grade child's homework amid a complicated block schedule and six teachers, and her response was to write a three-page CYA email to me, concluding that she declined to meet with me without "an administrator present", which struck me as odd, since *she* is an administrator! Those with little patience for pointless bureaucracy and entitled, do-it-my-way-or-take-a-hike teachers will not like this school. I plan to pull my child. Close Quote
