Summary

Sierra Oaks K-8 is a public K-8 school serving 614 students in Sacramento's San Juan Unified district, but it has experienced a significant and concerning academic decline over the past six years, dropping from a high-performing 4-star rating to its current 1-star status.

The school faces notable challenges, including a chronic absenteeism rate of 29.1%, which is higher than both district and state averages, and inconsistent performance across different grade levels and student groups. For instance, while its special education students perform relatively well, other subgroups rank much lower. Compared to nearby schools, Sierra Oaks sits in a concerning middle ground: it performs better than the lowest-ranked schools like Greer Elementary and Aspire Capitol Heights Academy, but significantly worse than higher-performing options such as Caleb Greenwood Elementary and charter schools like California Montessori Project - Capitol Campus.

Interestingly, this academic slide has occurred alongside an increase in students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. While Sierra Oaks spends less per student than many neighboring schools, this spending difference does not clearly explain the performance gap, as some higher-achieving charters operate with similar or lower budgets. The comparison suggests families in the area have a range of public school options with varying results, and Sierra Oaks' trajectory and current standing are important factors for parents to consider.

Open Quote I've never seen a school like this. Most of the kids are rude and bullies to others, while nearly every kid in my class makes racist jokes mostly about Asians, Muslims, and Blacks. I have never felt so uncomfortable and humiliated in my life. Not to mention that they demand money for these big field trips as if parents can just pop up with 400 dollars in their pockets(?) My science teacher even yelled at some girl so much that he made her cry. Take it from a student's point a view, don't waste your time. I can't wait to be graduating from this excuse of a school next week. Close Quote
