Summary

Mission Avenue Open Elementary is a public K-6 school serving 415 students in the San Juan Unified district in Carmichael, CA, which has seen a gradual decline in its statewide academic ranking over the past decade.

Academically, the school's performance is mixed; while its math and science proficiency rates are higher than the district average, they generally trail behind the state average. A notable strength is its exceptional science program, which outperforms both district and state averages. However, the school faces challenges with a high student-teacher ratio and significant performance disparities among different student groups, with English Language Learners and Asian students struggling significantly. Its overall academic trajectory has been declining, particularly in English Language Arts.

When compared to nearby schools, Mission Avenue stands out for its very low chronic absenteeism rate, which is much better than most neighbors like Carmichael Elementary and Whitney Avenue Elementary. It achieves these attendance results and competitive academic outcomes with moderate per-student spending, less than some higher-spending schools nearby. The school occupies a middle ground in its area, performing better than some schools with higher economic need but lagging behind higher-performing schools like Mary Deterding Elementary and Mariemont Elementary.

Open Quote Did you know that Mission Avenue Open Elementary is an alternative school? Wait a minute, they are onto something.....something wonderful. While the school lives up to the state and district standards, they are onto something with Piaget’s developmental learning theory, Dewey’s constructivist learning theory, Montessori’s use of manipulative materials, and Kohl’s thematic, integrated curriculum. Wow, that sounds like a mouthful. Guess what? My child gets to experience this at school everyday.....and it is virtually seamless. What's not to love about this school? Not much. For a public school, it acts like a private school education that people normally pay for. Guess again? Your tax dollars go to this school and are well spent. How many public schools can say that in California? Let's hope that there are many. In the San Juan Unified School District in the Sacramento Area, you can find the investment in the future, our future, well spent. Close Quote
