Summary

King Junior (Martin Luther) Academic Middle is a public school serving 367 students in grades 6-8 within the San Francisco Unified school district, and recent data shows it faces significant academic challenges, with its statewide ranking dropping from the 35th to the 24th percentile over two years.

The school's overall academic performance, particularly in math and English, is well below both district and state averages, and it struggles with a high rate of chronic student absenteeism at 30.9%. Interestingly, the school spends more per student than many higher-performing neighbors like Hoover (Herbert) Middle and Aptos Middle, which have much lower absenteeism and are ranked in the 80th percentiles. A notable comparison is Brown Junior (Willie L) Middle, located less than a mile away with similar resources and student demographics, yet it performs significantly better, ranking in the 62nd percentile.

Performance varies widely for different groups of students at the school; for instance, supports for English learners and students experiencing homelessness appear effective, while other student groups face much greater academic challenges. The school's recent sharp decline and the wide performance gaps compared to nearby schools suggest that factors beyond funding, such as instructional practices or school culture, are key areas for improvement and further investigation by school leadership.

Open Quote I had to take my daughter from this school she's a good student and has never had a bad mark as a student or a referral. The school has quite a few disciplinary problems. And she did not feel comfortable there as a young african american girl trying to do well.. Close Quote
