Summary

Hoover (Herbert) Middle is a public middle school serving about 960 students in grades 6-8 within the diverse San Francisco Unified school district, consistently ranking in the top 20% of all California schools.

The school stands out for its strong and balanced support for all students, with particularly high achievement among English Learners and students from low-income families, while maintaining one of the lowest chronic absenteeism rates in the city at just 11.5%. This effective approach leads to solid academic results that exceed both district and state averages in English and Math. Notably, Hoover achieves these outcomes while serving a student population where nearly two-thirds qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a pattern that differs from some nearby schools like Everett Middle or Lick (James) Middle, which have similar economic demographics but significantly lower academic rankings.

Compared to other schools, Hoover also operates very efficiently, spending less per student than several peers while achieving better results. Its performance has been stable and consistent for nearly a decade, showing reliable quality across all three grade levels. While schools like Roosevelt Middle or Giannini (A.P.) Middle may rank slightly higher, Hoover's combination of strong academic support for a diverse student body, excellent attendance, and cost-effective operation makes it a compelling and successful choice for families.

Open Quote This school enables bullies! They try to downplay incidents when bullying is reported and do little to nothing to stop it. They are more concerned with the school and administration looking bad than the children's safety. A child was jumped and one of the kids slashed the boys leg with a knife. Parents outside of this incident were never notified and I doubt police were ever called. Things are covered up and swept under the rug by the principal and vice principals. Kids have no respect for the teachers and staff. Kids were texting and calling their parents when things would happen at the school so the administration implemented a no cellphone policy to try to avoid parents finding things out before they’re able to do any damage control. Theft at this school is also not being taken seriously. The kids can't use the school lockers and are forced to carry their belongings around all day and when they want to put their things down, their stuff is stolen. As a parent I deeply regret enrolling my child here. Avoid this school and the whole school district if possible. Close Quote
